Family Photographer Miami | Newborn and (Surprise) Engagement Photoshoot

What’s better than a documentary-style newborn photoshoot? One with a surprise marriage proposal!

Last month, Leticia and Leo asked me to take photos of their newborn, Luna, in their home in Miami only six days after her arrival. Little did I know that Leo had something else planned for the day. As Leticia got ready for the shoot in another room, he flashed me the engagement ring! Needless to say, I was beyond excited to be part of this very special occasion.

But before Leo could propose, we had to do the newborn session first.

Leticia's inspiration for the kind of photos she wanted out of this shoot was from a vintage photo of her as an infant with her aunt. The old photo in question was timeless and evocative. A real treasure. However, instead of staging a scene that is exactly like it, I found that a more genuine approach is to let the family interact (with minimal direction from me) and capture the moments that define Leticia and Leo as new parents.

Here are some of my favorites from the day:

After the newborn session in the nursery, it was time for the proposal! Leticia, of course, had no idea what was about to happen and we had to keep it that way until the time came. One of the things I had to figure out was how to make her change her outfit without raising suspicion. Lucky for me, she had a beautiful white dress hanging in front of the closet and I told her that I wanted a photo of her by the pool, wearing that dress.

After moving the session outdoors and taking a couple of photos, Leo dropped to one knee and popped the question (with Stella, their adorable German Shepherd, by his side) and Leticia said yes!

It was truly a magical moment as Leticia’s look of confusion transformed to surprise and then elation. Here are more photos of the newly-engaged couple with their growing family.
